There are two types of expanded steel that can be load bearing: Expanded Catwalk and Expanded Grating. When considering load bearing Expanded Metal, however, there are some important factors to keep in mind.
Expanded Catwalk
Steel Catwalk is structurally stronger then Expanded Grating because it is typically installed with the long way of the diamond running across the shorter span (width). Usually you will see Catwalk installed in walkways or elevated platforms. For example, frequent applications include stadiums, event spaces, and billboard platforms. The next time you drive by a billboard on the side of the road, you will likely notice a platform made from Catwalk!

Expanded Grating
While Expanded Grating is load bearing, the exact weight it can carry will be determined by factors such as material type and gauge. Typically, these Gratings will be found in stainless and carbon steel – durable materials that have higher load capabilities. However, Aluminum Expanded Grating can also be utilized as an architectural element for building facades due to its lightweight nature.

Don't forget that Expanded Metal Grating and Catwalk have load tables to help you determine which product is best for your walkway or platform needs. If you've decided Expanded Metal Grating or Catwalk are right for your project, check out this article on where to buy expanded metal.
