| The Difference Between Pipe and Tube |
|
| Tube |
|
Tube refers to round, square, rectangular or any shape of hollow material that is defined by the O.D. (outside diameter) and the wall thickness. For example, an appropriate description to specify a tube size would be, “I would like a 1-1/2 inch OD tube elbow with a 1/8 inch wall thickness.”
To order tube handrail components:
· Specify O.D. (outside diameter)
· Specify wall thickness

| Pipe - Most Common |
|
Pipe is round material that is defined by specific O.D. (outside diameter) and I.D. (inside diameter) measurements and the pipe schedule thickness. For example, an appropriate description to specify a pipe size would be, “I would like a 1-1/4 inch schedule 40 pipe elbow.” It is important to understand that a 1-1/4 inch pipe does not have a 1-1/4 inch I.D.; rather, it has a 1.38 inch I.D. based on a schedule 40 thickness.
To order pipe handrail components:
· Specify the pipe size
· Specify the schedule thickness (40, 10, or 5) see table
· Specify degree of bend (90º, 45º, etc.)
· Specify material type
If you don't know the pipe size you can:
· Specify O.D. (outside diameter)
· Specify I.D. (inside diameter)
· Specify schedule thickness (40, 10, or 5)
