DURADEK® and DURAGRID® Pultruded Fiberglass Bar Gratings are manufactured with a high percentage of glass within the laminate that provides high strength and stiffness and has a higher load capacity than Molded Fiberglass Grating. It is an ideal replacement for steel or aluminum gratings because it is lighter, corrosion resistant and fire retardant.
The bearing bars for these grating panels are shaped in either an I-bar, T-bar or Rectangular-bar configuration. Pultruded fiberglass grating panels come in a variety of resins and colors and are available with or without a slip resistant gritted surface. We also carry styles that comply with the VGB Act. Pultruded Fiberglass Gratings are a composite of fiberglass reinforcements (fibers and mat) and a thermosetting resin system produced by the pultrusion process. The bearing bars use both longitudinal (glass roving) and multidirectional (glass mat) reinforcements, as well as a synthetic surfacing veil, to provide strength and excellent corrosion resistance. The unique pultruded system consists of two continuous, pultruded spacer bars and a center core wedge. The spacers are notched at each bearing bar so the bars are both mechanically locked and chemically bonded to the web of each bearing bar. This separates and affixes bearing bars firmly in position and distributes concentrated loads to adjacent bars. The fibrous laminate is formed into a geometric shape (T or I) and pulled through a heated steel die. The laminate solidifies into the exact shape of the die cavity as it is being continuously pulled by the pultrusion machine.
A wide variety of bearing bar shapes, along with various bearing bar and cross bar spacings, are available depending on the design requirements.
The traditional “I” bar shape provides maximum flexibility in design. The “I” bar is available in 1, 1–1/4, and 1–1/2 inch heights.
The unique “T” bar shape provides a more solid walking surface than the traditional “I” bar shape. The “T” bar is non-corrosive and is available in 1, 1–1/2, and 2 inch heights.
The Heavy Duty Rectangular Bar Series has been designed to take heavy wheel traffic such as forklifts, tow motors and truck traffic. Due to the variety of wheel types and loading, please contact the McNICHOLS’ sales team to help you determine the series of heavy duty grating to use. The Heavy Duty Rectangular Bar is available in 1, 1–1/4, 1–1/2, 1–3/4, 2, 2–1/4, and 2–1/2 inch heights.
Pultruded Grating: Strength and Durability
Pultruded Grating products offer superior strength and stiffness. Since glass is the key contributor to the structural performance, pultruded grating offers the highest strength- to-unit-weight ratio.
The bearing bars use both longitudinal (glass roving) and multidirectional (glass mat) reinforcements, as well as a synthetic surfacing veil, to provide strength and excellent corrosion resistance. The densely packed core of continuous glass rovings gives the bar strength and stiffness in the longitudinal direction, while the continuous glass mat provides strength in the transverse direction and prevents chipping, cracking and lineal fracturing.
Pultruded Fiberglass Grating is composed of approximately 30% resin and 70% continuous fiberglass strand, providing superior loading strength when compared to Molded Fiberglass Gratings. The bearing bars can be UV coated for added protection and color stability for outdoor purposes. The gratings are therefore low maintenance and will never rust or need to be painted.
Pultruded Grating: Corrosion Resistance
The degree of corrosion resistance for pultruded grating is superior to stainless steel, aluminum and galvanized gratings. The amount of corrosion resistance is dependent on the type of resin used in the pultrusion process. The synthetic surfacing veil provides a 100% pure resin surface for added corrosion resistance and UV protection. Pultruded Fiberglass Grating has less resistance to corrosion when compared to Molded Fiberglass grating.
Pultruded Grating: Fabrication Features
The unique cross bar construction allows the grating panels to be easily cut and modified to fit almost any plant requirement. Pultruded panels are made in lengths up to 24 feet, allowing greater versatility for installation purposes
