Ordering

The majority of McNICHOLS® Stair Treads are Bar Grating, Plank Grating, or Fiberglass Grating. The following selections are important considerations to help you choose right type of Grating Stair Treads for your project or application. Please specify:

Bar Grating

1

Application

Consider Bar Grating Stair Tread features including loading requirements, surface needs, environmental considerations, etc. We invite you to browse Bar Grating Stair Tread applications in our Product and Application Gallery.

2

Construction Type

Choose from several Bar Grating Stair Tread construction types including Standard-Duty Welded, Heavy-Duty Welded, Swage-Locked, and Press-Locked.

3

Series Type & Name

Determine the series type and name (GW-100, GHB-150, GAL-125, etc.) of the Bar Grating Stair Treads for your project.

4

Product Spacing

Select the product spacing (the measurement from the center of one bearing bar to the center of an adjacent bearing bar) of the Bar Grating Stair Treads needed for your application. Product Spacing (e.g. 19-W-4) refers to the industry specification for Bar Grating products. For example, the first number refers to the bearing bar spacing measured on center (19 = 19/16" or 1-3/16"), the letter refers to the construction type (W = welded), and the last number references the cross bar spacing measured on center (4 = 4").

5

Primary Material / Product Finish

Select the primary material type including Aluminum, Carbon Steel, Galvanized Steel, or Stainless Steel. Inventory is typically "mill finish" for Aluminum, Carbon Steel, and Stainless Steel. Hot-Dipped Galvanized, Powder Coated Black, or Powder Coated Gray finishes are available for some Carbon Steel items. We provide more information on Primary Material Types and Product Finishes in the links provided in the Overview section on the Stair Tread Resources landing page.

6

Bearing Bar Size & Shape

Choose the bearing bar height and thickness (e.g. 1-1/4" Height x 3/16" Thick) of your Bar Grating product selection. Select from our inventory of Rectangular Bar, I-Bar, or T-Bar bearing bar shapes.

7

Product Surface

Determine if your application requires a smooth, serrated, or a grooved product surface.

8

Nosing

Bar Grating Stair Treads are almost always supplied with 90° Angle Nosing along the leading edge. Nosing is welded to the first Bar Grating bearing bar and to each Carrier Plate (see Carrier Plates below) across the length (span) dimension. Nosing helps with Stair Tread sight lines as well as enhancing slip-resistance. Select from our inventory of Nosing types, including Checkered Plate 90° Angle Nosing, the most common choice among customers. Stair Tread inventory items ready for immediate shipment have standard Nosing attached.

9

Carrier Plates

Carrier Plates (sometimes referred to as End Plates) are rectangular shaped pieces of metal that are designed to be welded to open the ends of the Bar Grating bearing bars and optional Nosing perpendicular to the Stair Tread length (span). Each Carrier Plate has a mounting slot and bolt hole for structural attachment purposes. Stair Treads can also be welded to structurals/stringers if desired. Choose the Carrier Plate gauge/thickness and size (height x width) for your Stair Tread application. Stair Tread inventory items ready for immediate shipment have standard Carrier Plates attached.

10

Span

Determine the span or length of your Bar Grating Stair Tread selection. Bearing bars run parallel to the span for all Stair Tread products.

11

Percent Open Area

Choose the percentage of open area desired in the Bar Grating Stair Tread selection.

12

Product Size & Quantity

Identify the number of Stair Treads and the size(s) desired (width and length). The width of the Stair Tread is the distance between the outside front edge of the Nosing to outside edge of the last bearing bar (front to back measurement). This measurement is sometimes referred to as depth. The length (span) of the Stair Tread is measured from the outside edges of the Carrier Plates attached to the open ends of the bearing bars and Nosing.

13

Special Requirements

Specify any requirements like additional welding needs, surface treatment (e.g. grinding, etc.), non-standard tolerances, etc.

Plank Grating

1

Application

Consider Plank Grating Stair Tread physical requirements such as loading, surface requirements, environmental considerations, etc. We invite you to browse Plank Grating Stair Tread applications in our Product and Application Gallery.

2

Construction Type

Choose from several Plank Grating Stair Tread construction types including Plank, Heavy-Duty Plank, Heavy-Duty Extruded Plank, Stair Tread Plank, and Extruded Stair Tread Plank.

3

Series Type & Name

Determine the series type and name (GRIP STRUT® Plank, TRACTION TREAD™ Plank, etc.) of the Plank Grating Stair Tread for your project.

4

Primary Material / Product Finish

Select the primary material type including Aluminum, Carbon Steel, Galvanized Steel, or Stainless Steel. Inventory is typically "mill finish" unless otherwise specified. We provide more information on Primary Material Types and Product Finishes in the links provided in the Overview section on the Stair Tread Resources landing page.

5

Gauge / Thickness

Decide the material gauge number or thickness in inches. Extruded products do not have an actual gauge due to the manufacturing process. These items are specified as an Extrusion.

6

Surface Profile

Choose the surface profile for your application. A surface profile includes the number of openings to width, type of opening, and the width of the Stair Tread measured in inches (e.g. 5-Diamond (11-3/4" Width), 6-Hole (12" Width), etc.). Our GRIP STRUT® Stair Tread Plank item has a 1-1/4" wide flat shelf to accept 1-1/4" wide Cast Abrasive Nosing.

7

Product Surface

Choose between diamond serrated, slip-resistant, or grooved surface types.

8

Channel Depth

Select the channel depth for your Plank Grating Stair Tread surface profile selection.

9

Carrier Plates

Carrier Plates are C-shaped bent metal angles designed to be inserted and welded into Plank Grating Stair Tread channel ends perpendicular to the length (span) of the Stair Tread. The Carrier Plates have a mounting slot and bolt hole for structural attachment purposes. Stair Treads can also be welded to structurals/stringers if desired. The gauge/thickness of the Carrier Plates is identical to the Stair Tread gauge/thickness selected. Stair Tread inventory items ready for immediate shipment have Carrier Plates attached.

10

Percent Open Area

Choose the percentage of open area desired in the Plank Grating Stair Tread selection.

11

Product Size & Quantity

Identify the number of Stair Treads and the size(s) desired (width and length). The width of the Stair Tread is the distance between the outside edges (front to back measurement). The length (span) of the Stair Tread is measured from the outside edges of the Plank including inserted Carrier Plates.

12

Special Requirements

Specify any requirements (e.g. non-standard tolerances, etc.).

Fiberglass Grating

1

Application

Consider Fiberglass Grating Stair Tread physical requirements such as exposure to chemicals and/or extreme temperatures. Determine fire retardant needs as well as loading and support requirements. We invite you to browse Fiberglass Grating Stair Tread applications in our Product and Application Gallery.

2

Construction Type

Choose from our inventory of Molded Stair Tread Cover Panels, Molded Stair Tread Panels, or Pultruded Stair Tread Panels. Each of these construction types can be cut-to-size.

3

Series Type

Determine the series type and name (MS-STC-09, MS-I-ST-6015 - DURAGRID®, etc.) of the Fiberglass Grating Stair Tread for your project.

4

Resin & Type

Choose the resin and type for your application (e.g. SPF Polyester, etc.). We provide more information on resins, types, and descriptions in the link provided in the Charts section on the Stair Tread Resources landing page.

5

Color

Color (e.g. Green, Yellow, etc.) is a selection to make when you choose from our line of Fiberglass Grating Stair Treads. We supply different color Stair Treads for both Molded and Pultruded construction types.

6

Grid Height, Size, & Shape

If your selection is a Molded Grating Stair Tread Panel, choose the grid height (measured in inches), grid pattern (measured in inches), and grid shape (with integral nosing on both panel lengths) for your project. Molded Stair Tread Cover Panels have a 3/16" thick solid surface with integral 90° angle nosing.

7

Bearing Bar Shape & Size

If your selection is a Pultruded construction type, choose the bearing bar height and top flange width (measured in inches) and bearing bar shape (I-Bar in stock) of the Fiberglass Grating Stair Tread Panel for your application. Stock panels have 2" wide integral nosing on one side of the Panel's length.

8

Product Surface

Molded Stair Tread Cover Panels and Molded Stair Tread Panels are supplied with a grit surface. Pultruded Stair Tread Panels come standard with a medium grit surface.

9

Nosing

The 90° angle integral nosing on a Molded Stair Tread Cover Panel is yellow along the front edge and the first 2" on the surface of the Tread Cover. Molded Stair Tread Panels have integral nosing on both sides of the panel (length dimension). The nosing has a grit surface to enhance slip resistance. Pultruded Stair Tread Panels have 2" wide integral nosing on one side of the panel (length dimension) with a medium grit surface.

10

Percent Open Area

Choose the percentage of open area desired in the Fiberglass Grating Stair Tread Panel. Molded Stair Tread Cover Panels have a solid surface with no open area.

11

Product Size & Quantity

Identify the number of Stair Treads and the size(s) desired (width and length). The width of a Molded Stair Tread is the distance from the front edge of the integral nosing to the outside edge of the grid pattern. For Molded Stair Tread Covers, the width is determined by measuring the distance from the front edge of the Nosing to the back of the Tread Cover. The width of a Pultruded Stair Tread is the distance from the front edge of the integral nosing to outside edge of the last bearing bar. All product widths are measured from front to back. This measurement is sometimes referred to as depth. The length (span) of the Stair Tread is measured from the outside edges of the bearing bars ends, or for Stair Tread Covers, the ends of the solid surface.

12
