Eco-Friendly: McNICHOLS & The Environment

As a Hole Products provider with 19 locations from coast to coast, McNICHOLS recognizes its responsibility to the environment. We have taken steps to become more sustainable, such as retrofitting our Metals Service Centers with energy-efficient lighting as well as implementing recycling. We are also proud that our Hole Products enable efficient, environmentally sound designs.

Green Building Potential

Structures featuring McNICHOLS® Perforated and Expanded Metals, Wire Mesh, and other products have obtained Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Our products have post-consumer and post-industrial recycled content that varies by material type. They are specified for sunscreens, canopies, and other design elements that reduce solar impact for commercial and residential projects. Average post-consumer and post-industrial recycled contents are listed below. Recycled content will vary by product line.

Aluminum Content: 10%-35% post-consumer, 50%-90% post-industrial.
Plain Steel Content: 20%-80% post-consumer, 10%-40% post-industrial.
Stainless Steel Content: 10%-25% post-consumer, 20%-35% post-industrial.
Copper Content: Average recycled content ranges from 45%-54%.

A widely recognized example is the Margarido House, a San Francisco area residence completed in 2008. McNICHOLS® Bar Grating forms the house's signature, wing-like sunshade, which provides natural cooling and supports a rainwater recycling system. The house is both LEED Platinum-certified and GreenPoint-rated.

SkySong 3, a multi-use commercial building in Scottsdale, Arizona, is another prominent example of a sustainable structure featuring McNICHOLS® Hole Products. McNICHOLS® Perforated Metal forms vertical fins along a large expanse of exterior glass, and McNICHOLS® Expanded Metal provides a central, semi-transparent design feature. The application helps diffuse solar impact and adds visual appeal. SkySong 3, which debuted in 2015, has achieved LEED Silver certification.

Building green has financial advantages. By conserving energy and water and reducing waste, environmentally friendly designs reduce operating and maintenance costs. Certain LEED certification levels also carry tax benefits. The U.S. Green Build Council launched the LEED program to recognize green building practices. We are honored to be involved in many projects that are eco-minded. Please allow McNICHOLS to help you with your next eco-friendly design!

Responsibility as a Cataloger

Protecting our forests is a cornerstone of an environmentally responsible cataloger. As a distributor of product catalogs, McNICHOLS works with printers certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable forest management. Our printers practice production methods that reduce print order overruns and waste. Several times a year, we cleanse our mailing lists to decrease the number of catalogs and printed materials we mail. We continue to reexamine the frequency of our mailings, as well as paper cost, weight, size, formats, and other factors that influence environmental friendliness. In addition, digital mediums such as mcnichols.com allow customers to experience and shop for products electronically without the use of printed materials. Each McNICHOLS invoice is marked with a reminder to "Go Green" and to pause before printing. These are just a few of the ways we choose to be a company that is eco-minded.

Energy Star Partner

McNICHOLS is a proud partner in ENERGY STAR, a joint voluntary program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. ENERGY STAR promotes energy conservation and fights climate change.

As an ENERGY STAR partner, we measure, track and strive to improve our energy performance. This designation represents our commitment to protecting the environment for future generations. We share this goal with our associates and in the communities in which we operate.
