Scott McNichols President & CEO The Hole Story!® Robert L. “Bob” McNichols, the sole survivor of a WWII B-17 crash, built his life and business on Christian principles, valuing service, employees, and customers. After being rescued and held at Stalag Luft I POW camp, he was liberated on May 1, 1945. In 1952, Bob and his wife Phyllis founded McNICHOLS CO., focusing on metal products with “holes,” like Perforated and Expanded Metal, inspiring the motto “The Hole Story.” Trademarked in 1975, it began a tradition of playful “hole” references throughout the Company. After Bob passed in 1981, his son Gene took over and introduced the mission “Service, Quality and Performance.” Today, McNICHOLS remains a family business with 19 locations nationwide. Bob’s faith and his saying, “To God be the Glory,” continue to inspire the Hole Team, now guided by the third generation. Our Mission: Provide Hole Products Through Superior Service, Quality, and Performance… That’s The Hole Story! Dear Hole Customer, Thank you for the opportunity to share The Hole Story with you. 2 855.374.4250 McNICHOLS® Bar Grating McNICHOLS® Bar Grating brings safety, strength, and durability to industrial and architectural applications and is regularly installed on bridges, factory floors, platforms, and as Stair Treads. Bar Grating is a high-performance, low-maintenance product capable of handling pedestrian or vehicular loads. Openings allow air, light, sound, and fluid to pass, while many surface profiles offer slip-resistant properties. STANDARD-DUTY WELDED HEAVY-DUTY WELDED SWAGE-LOCKED PRESS-LOCKED STAIR TREADS How to Specify & Order 1. Choose between Standard-Duty Welded, Heavy-Duty Welded, Swage-Locked, Press-Locked, or Clinched construction types. 2. Determine the series type and name (GW-100, GHB-150, GAL-125, etc.) of the product for your project, including ADA-compliant items, if necessary. 3. Pick Aluminum (AL), Carbon Steel (CS) (Powder Coated available), Galvanized Steel (GV), or Stainless Steel (SS). Inventory is typically mill finish. 4. Specify the product spacing (e.g., 19-W-4) for your project. The first number (19) refers to the bearing bar spacing measured on center (19/16” or 1-3/16”). The last number (4) references the cross bar spacing measured on center. 5. Select the height, thickness, and surface (smooth, serrated, grooved) of the bearing bars, and choose from Rectangular Bar, I-Bar, and T-Bar shapes. 6. Select the direction the bearing bars need to run to properly support the load (span). See illustration below for more information on span. Important Considerations Understanding how span, direction of travel, and load types affect Bar Grating is essential to ensuring its safety, performance, and structural integrity in any application. UNDERSTANDING SPAN & DIRECTION OF TRAVEL Span refers to the distance between supports, and it’s critical that the bearing bars run parallel to them, regardless of the direction of traffic. Incorrect orientation can compromise strength and safety. Bar Grating should be installed so the bearing bars span the shortest distance between supports— regardless of direction of travel. Whether covering a trench drain or building a walkway, proper Grating alignment is key. When designing with Bar Grating, it is essential to consider the type of load being applied. Uniform Loads (evenly distributed weight) and Concentrated Loads (weight concentrated in a specific area) are important design considerations. Selecting the correct load type ensures optimal performance and safety. Our experts can guide you in selecting the Grating solution based on your specific load conditions, ensuring structural integrity. Bearing bars run width of the trench, supports run length of the trench. Deflection Uniform Load (“U”) Clear Span Concentrated Load (“C”) SELECTING YOUR LOAD TYPE

Our team works closely with you to ensure that any adjustments or specific requirements are incorporated, ensuring the final product meets your needs. TRIM & LOAD BANDING Banding is used to close the open ends of bearing bars and enhance both appearance and handling. Trim banding is welded to the first two bars, then every four to six bars, while load banding is welded to each bearing bar to support heavier load-bearing applications. Trim Banding Load Banding SHEARING OPTIONS Uniform or Equal Shear are typically preferred where visual consistency is important, creating cleaner alignment for architectural applications. Random Shear is often specified for industrial use as a more economical option where appearance is secondary to performance. Random Uniform Equal INSTALLATION HIGHLIGHT: TRENCH DRAINS When Bar Grating is used for trench drain applications, proper Grating alignment and installation is key, especially in areas encountering heavy loads. Spans listed in table are clear (inside structural supports). Values to left of bolded black line produce deflection < 1/4" under a uniform load of 100 Lbs./Sf., allowing for safe pedestrian comfort. Values to right apply to other load types at discretion of engineer. SGW, SGW-2 and CMW-4 Series 1/4" deflection information is available at mcnichols.com. For 1" height and taller serrated surface bars, subtract 1/4" from bar height and reference that loading information in table (e.g., 1-1/2" height x 3/16" thick serrated bar has same loading as 1-1/4" height x 3/16" thick smooth bar). CMW-4 Series with 3/16" thick bars is ADA compliant. Technical information is theoretical. McNICHOLS is not liable for improper evaluation or use of Bar Grating. Deflection results will not change. 5/16" BAR 1.25 3/8" BAR 1.50 U - Uniform Load - Lbs./Sf. D - Deflection in Inches C - Concentrated Load - Lbs./Ft. of Width at Mid-Span Fs - 20,000 PSI E - 29,000,000 PSI | Additional information at mcnichols.com. Spans listed in table are clear (inside structural supports). Values to left of bolded black line produce deflection < 1/4" under a uniform load of 100 Lbs./Sf., allowing for safe pedestrian comfort. Values to right apply to other load types at discretion of engineer. GHB and GHB-2 Series 1/4" deflection information for 5/16" and 3/8" thick bearing bars is available at mcnichols.com. For 1" height and taller serrated surface bars, subtract 1/4" from bar height and reference that loading information in table (e.g., 1-1/2" height x 1/4" thick serrated bar has same loading as 1-1/4" height x 1/4" thick smooth bar). GHB and GHB-2 Grating is not usually selected for standard floor layouts, but is typically chosen for rolling or vehicular loads for narrow space work. Technical information is theoretical. McNICHOLS is not liable for improper evaluation or use of Bar Grating. GHB SERIES PANEL WIDTHS NO. Spans listed in table are clear (inside structural supports). Values to left of bolded black line produce deflection ≤ 1/4" under a uniform load of 100 Lbs./Sf., allowing for safe pedestrian comfort. Values to right apply to other load types at discretion of engineer. For 1" height and taller serrated surface bars, subtract 1/4" from bar height and reference that loading information in table (e.g., 1-1/2" height x 3/16" thick serrated bar has same loading as 1-1/4" height x 3/16" thick smooth bar).
