Environmentally friendly designs greatly improve energy efficiency, leading to reduced energy expenses and a reduction in water and waste, thereby improving overall building operating and maintenance costs. Tax benefits may also be available at certain LEED certification levels.
LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System encourages an accelerated global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tool and performance criteria. LEED promoted a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health:

Sustainable site development, Water savings, Energy efficiency,
Materials selection, and Indoor environmental quality.

LEED® was created by the United States Green Build Council (USGBC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization with a vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation. Its membership includes corporations, builders, universities, government agencies, and other nonprofit organizations. USGBC is dedicated to expanding green building practices and education.
