Construction

Test Sieves are accurately and optically constructed by placing wire cloth between two suppressed die formed frames. The frames can be brass or stainless and the wire cloth can be brass or stainless. A brass frame with brass wire cloth is the most cost effective construction. A brass frame with stainless steel wire cloth is a common item.

Diameter

Test Sieves are made in various diameters (8 and 10 are standard, 3, 6, 12, 18 inches, 200 or 300 mm).

Height and Depth

Test Sieves are offered in a full or half height, which is determined by the diameter of the sieve. The overall height is measured from the top of the sieve to the bottom. The depth to cloth is measured from the top of the sieve to the wire cloth.

Sieve Designation

Test Sieves are denoted by sieve designations that correspond to the values for test sieve apertures or openings recommended by the International Standards Organization, Geneva, Switzerland. You must choose a specific sieve designation when ordering.

Square Opening

The square opening is measured from the inside edge of one wire to the inside edge of the parallel wire.

Openings Per Linear Inch

The wire cloth in the sieve may be measured in meshes or the number of openings per linear inch. The mesh is measured from the center of one wire to the center of the next. For example, a 3-1/2 mesh has 3-1/2 little squares per one linear inch. The most common method for measuring wire cloth is by using the square opening measurement.

Top Covers

Top covers contain the media dust or filtered matter within the sieve when under vibration. Top covers also keep the sieve clean while not in use. A ring is available around the top cover making it easier to remove from the sieve.

Bottom Pans

Bottom pans catch the sieve media or filtered matter. Full or half height pans will be supplied based on the height of the sieve. Bottom pans can be made with or without a skirt. A skirt is the lip on the bottom of the pan that allows you to stack the pan on another sieve.

Quantity

Quantity is the number of sieves you will need. McNICHOLS will quote you on the exact quantity you specify and inform you if minimum quantities apply.
